Lindy Hop

Lately I've been trying to do things that scare the bajeezuz out of me. At the top of the list: dancing. Around the corner from the usual Wednesday night life drawing hangout is the Century Ballroom. A friend who I go to life drawing with is a fan of Lindy Hop and it so happens that the ballroom has an open Lindy Hop dance every Wednesday night, with a short beginners class beforehand. Hmmm.

Lindy Hop evolved in Harlem from the late 20's to early 30's. A member of the swing dance family it is said to be a fusion of jazz, tap, breakaway and charleston. The story goes that its name was inspired by Charles Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic. Headlines in the newspapers read "Lindy hops the Atlantic." One of the dances founders, Shorty George Snowden, was asked by a reporter at a competition what dance he was doing and he said, "I'm doing the Lindy Hop." Here is a prime example of the dance from the 1941 movie Hellzapoppin.

The beginners class I attended was great. They started with the basic rock step, triple step and went on to twirling your partner out and back in. I was quite horrible but could see some improvement over the half hour. After life drawing I went back to checkout the open dance. It was fun watching all the different styles that people develop. I only saw a few throwing moves, most couples sorta resembled the goings ons in this video.

What fascinates me is the rapid communication that goes on between the lead and follow. From what I understand there is a neutral frame pose that both dancers return to and which the lead manipulates to tell the follow where they are going next. Similar I'm sure to other couples dancing. The really good couples, although totally improvising, looked like they had choreographed their dance prior. I'm seriously considering taking more lessons.

More Life Drawing!

Same venue, different model. Decided to try a different medium.

Weapons of choice: Derwent watercolor pencils, Kuretake brushpen.

When time permitted and/or I wasn't afraid of potentially messy up my pencil rendering, I used the brushpen to apply water to the color pencil, dissolving it out to become as if painting with real watercolors. This was my first attempt at this. I haven't done much watercoloring in the past. I'll definitely keep at it.

Life Drawing Dump! Part Deux!

Went to another life drawing session last night.  Different venue than the last.  Here the model changed poses every 2, 5 or 15 min.  Used black and white charcoal on paper.

Red Delicious

Getting back into oil painting. Last finished piece was over 4 years ago. Once fully dried I'll get a better photo/scan up.

Oil on Canvas Board. 5"x7"

Simple setup: Cut apple placed on open sketchbook. Inspired by DailyPaintWorks. Overall happy with result. I think I adequately got the desired colors. Still a ways to go on getting the proper control, mostly throwing bits of color down and mixing it on the canvas. The actual apple had more orange/yellow skin streaks.

Cabinet

Heres a cabinet I recently designed/built to house a 46" TV and various components. Completed in about 2 months, working mostly on weekends. Composed mostly of plywood with maple front trim, all painted satin black.  The lower panel has a piano hinge running along the bottom and magnetic spring latches at its top to allow it to pop open when pressed.

Mighty Mugg Mod

So I never got around to finishing the Wonder Woman sculpt, lost a bit of interest for now anyway, so I switched gears and decided to paint a Mighty Mugg. Started out with a Chewbacca, which can be found for around $9.99. Airbrushed the skin tone and the red and blue parts, then hand painted the rest. I think my friend will get a big kick out of it as we have talked about modding one to look like Admiral Ackbar. Wish I took more process photos. The gold rope was the handle of a gift bag.
